The goal of the Drug Evaluation and Classification program, also known as the Drug Recognition Expert (DRE) Program employs highly trained officers to remove operators impaired by drugs from the public highways.
The Windham County Sheriff's Department is proud to announce, in cooperation with the Vermont Governor's Highway Safety Program its participation in the DRE program.
The DRE officers receive training in the human body's response to drugs and their ability to impair the operation of a motor vehicle.
Initially developed in the 1970's, DRE training has been validated through both laboratory and field studies conducted by Johns Hopkins University and by the Los Angeles Police Department.
Operators who are stopped by officers across the county and the state, who suspect a person is operating under the influence of a drug may request a DRE to perform an evaluation on a suspect.
