Sgt. Norton began his law enforcement career at the age of 14 when he joined the Police Cadet program with the Ludlow (VT) Police Department. He remained a cadet until his graduation from Black River High School in 1993.

Following high school Sgt. Norton served three years in the United States Army, stationed at Fort Campbell KY, home of the 101'st Airborne (Air Assault) Division.

After being honorably discharged from the Army, Sgt. Norton moved back to Vermont for a short time where he worked as a Part-Time Officer and Dispatcher with the Ludlow Police Department and a Part-Time Deputy with the Windsor County Sheriff's Department.

In September of 1997 Sgt. Norton again left Vermont and became a Patrol Officer with the City of Iola (KS) Police Department where he worked the midnight shift for the next five years. During that time Sgt. Norton became very involved in narcotic investigations and in the detection of impaired drivers. In 2001 Sgt. Norton became the first municipal officer in Southeast Kansas to be certified as a Drug Recognition Expert (DRE). The main purpose of a DRE is the detection, arrest and successful prosecution of drug impaired drivers.

In November of 2002 Sgt. Norton returned to Vermont, joining the Springfield Police Department as a Patrol Officer. In 2004 he was promoted to the rank of Corporal where he remained until joining the Windham County Sheriff's Office in March of 2014.

Sgt. Norton is currently certified as a Datamaster DMT Supervisor, DUI Checkpoint Supervisor, CMV Weights and Length Enforcement, Automated License Plate Reader User (LPR), NCIC Full-Service Terminal Operator (Dispatcher) and Field Training Officer (FTO).

Off duty Sgt. Norton loves to spend time camping, fishing and traveling with his wife and daughter.
